Be Vigilant against Deceitful Monks and Nuns
Of the various signs of the Dharma age of degeneration, most appear with respect to monks and nuns.
There are some monks and nuns who are monastics in appearance only. They believe that if they gain a little social status, they can become eminent masters.
These people never study, reflect, or practice the Dharma, nor do they have even a modicum of virtue.
Some of them even lack the most basic Buddhist knowledge.
While their actions cause great amusement, we cannot help lamenting for the future of Buddhism.
The sutras record that as early as the time of Kashyapa Buddha,2 there was a King Kriki who dreamed of an elephant.
Its body was outside a window, but for a long while its tail refused to come out of the building.
What is the meaning of this dream?
It foreboded that during the final age of Shakyamuni Buddha’s era,
although many monastics had taken vows with their body, their minds were still reluctant to leave behind the eight worldly dharmas.
There is a story about one such monk. On his alms rounds, he asked a family if their life was peaceful.
The master of the house answered, “Very much so!” Surprisingly, when the monk heard this, he was greatly disappointed.
Why? It is because if this family had just lost a relative,
this would have been an opportunity to chant sutras and perform transference for the dead.
Then he could have received monetary offerings.
Practitioners like this have hearts of such evil that their conduct will definitely lead them farther and farther from liberation.
Yet the more ignorant these people are, the more arrogant they tend to be.
When they have the opportunity to meet an authentic master,
not only do they feel no respect whatsoever, but they act arrogant and rude and treat the master with contempt.
On the surface, they have shaved their heads to become monks and nuns and abandoned their small worldly homes.
In reality, however, they are building and defending an even bigger “fame and fortune” home!
